About Stairway Lifts

What do you call that thing that carries people up and down the steps?

It can be a little frustrating… Knowing what you want, but not knowing the proper word for it.  Call it a chairlift, stair lift, automatic stair climber, stairway lift… You know what I mean! It’s that seat that you can ride that goes up and down the stairs automatically.

People do call stairway lifts a lot of different things:  seatlift, chairlift, stair climber, stairlift…  By any name, a stairway lift can sure make going up and down stairs much easier and safer for those of us who have difficulty.

How does it work?

Ok, ok.. so it isn’t a chairlift.. or stairlift.. it’s a Stairway Lift (after all, we are called Missouri Stairway Lift), but what does it do?  How does it work?

The stairway lifts we offer are the result of several decades of experience.  They are designed to be simple, with an extremely high level of reliability.  With regular maintenance, our stairway lifts have an extremely long lifespan.

We start with a heavy-gauge aluminum track, designed to deflect dust and debris from the guide track and power wire areas, which keeps the Stairway Lift operating trouble-free.  The track is mounted to the steps only (not the wall) with adjustable steel brackets.

On our Stairway Lifts, a steel gear-rack is built into the track and the unit is driven up and down by a steel pinion gear and steel worm-drive reduction gearbox.  A  ½ horsepower DC motor drives the gearbox.  The power drive system is microprocessor-controlled.  This computerized operation allows the unit to start and stop smoothly, integrates wireless-remote controls and eliminates the need for power-consuming relays that are prone to failure.  The kind of reliability you get from this system  is why the manufacturer puts a five year warranty on the drive train.

With the 24v DC motor, these Stairway Lifts can be used with AC power, or configured with a Battery Operated System (BOS).  The BOS unit comes with two 12v batteries and charging stations at the top and bottom of the track.

Will it work on my staircase?

There are numerous factors to make sure that the Stairway Lift is properly configured for your steps.  We send a trained consultant to your home, at no charge, to make sure your Stairway Lift is configured and installed correctly on your steps.

Our Stairway Lifts can be configured for nearly any stairway, whether curved or with a door at the top or bottom.  They can also be installed in a stairway as narrow as 32” wide.

Our Stairway Lifts require a regular 110v outlet for power, which can be located near either the top or bottom of the steps.

Can I install it myself?

Our technicians are factory trained and have installed many stairway lifts in a number of different situations.  They come to your home prepared to install your lift and to handle most situations that may arise.

While some dealers will sell lifts for you to install yourself, we feel that there are many problems with this way of doing business.  The lift may be damaged or have missing parts, the track measurement may be made incorrectly or vary from a “standard” measurement, and an incorrectly installed lift may cause damage to your home, or be dangerous to ride.

The manufacturer of our Stairway Lifts is Thyssen-Krupp Access.  They are an experienced manufacturer backed by Thyssen-Krupp, a reliable name in residential and commercial elevator products.  Thyssen-Krupp Access manufactures and delivers Stairway Lifts all over the world.  They have many quality control measures to ensure that each lift is manufactured and configured to exacting standards.  Even still, an occasional lift may need some TLC from our technicians.

As another part of quality control, our technicians inspect each lift before it is installed and during installation to ensure that all safety features are intact, adjusted and working properly as well as all other functions of the unit are working properly.  This way, you may be sure that you or your loved ones will have safe and reliable operation of our lifts.

Most people can understand the basic mechanics and perform simple installations of most household appliances.  For most household appliances, there is a ready source of information and help in your local community.  Stairway Lifts, however, are not so common, and expertise is more limited than with other appliances.

If you were to purchase a new or used Stairway Lift from a company and self-install, you may find it difficult to know whether parts are missing, broken or misadjusted.  If you do find these problems, you may also find it difficult to get help from the company who sold you the lift, or to get replacement parts under warranty.  It is all to common to hear about consumers getting blamed for broken or missing parts that should be covered by warranty.

One of the most expensive parts, and most common problems of installing yourself, is the Stairway Lift track.  The measurement can be made incorrectly, misunderstood or entered incorrectly on order forms, or you may have a special circumstance with your staircase that requires a non-standard track length.  Who will bear the cost of a replacement track that doesn’t fit?  What about the costs of shipping track to and from the dealer?  When you purchase a lift from Missouri Stairway Lift Corp, you don’t need to worry about these problems, since we do all of the measuring and installation.  We will take care of you.

There are a wide variety of staircases and materials that your steps are constructed from.  With Missouri Stairway Lift, we ensure that your Stairway Lift is mounted correctly, using the proper fasteners.  We also ensure that the staircase has the proper strength to support the weight of the Stairway Lift and the person using it.

Our trained staff will also examine your staircase for obstructions, abnormalities and other safety hazards that can affect the safe operation of your lift.  By doing this, we can ensure that your Stairway Lift will be installed properly and will operate without causing damage to your home or compromising your safety.
